The use of natural resources, especially farm land, pastureland and forests, shapes both socio-economic development and the state of ecological systems in Central Asia. Against the backdrop of growing land use conflicts, increasing climate volatility and the loss of traditional forms of land management, concepts of sustainable, biodiversity-preserving agricultural and land use are increasingly becoming the focus of scientific and development policy projects.

The projects listed in this section examine key issues relating to the interaction between land use, ecological functions and resilience. The '''Agriwanet''' project analyzes the effects of water scarcity and agricultural reforms on agricultural systems in five Central Asian countries. '''CROSSGRASS''' is dedicated to the spatio-temporal dynamics of grassland ecosystems under the influence of climate variability and political framework conditions. At the same time, practice-oriented projects such as '''JuniperCA''' or the project on walnut forest use in Kyrgyzstan focus on participatory approaches to sustainable management and resource use.

Particular importance is attached to projects on agrobiodiversity, which are being implemented in Tajikistan and Usbekistan, among other places, with the aim of preserving the genetic diversity of agricultural crops, promoting local adaptability and strengthening food security in the long term. In addition, this thematic area also includes projects that deal with the research of agricultural and forestry value chains. The focus here is on questions of sustainable use, processing and marketing of these chains. The aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of existing approaches to promoting environmentally friendly and economically viable production systems in the region.
The platform is aimed at researchers, political decision-makers, NGOs and international organizations that are active in Central Asia or are interested in the region. It is intended to help make existing knowledge visible, facilitate access to sources and contacts and thus avoid redundancies.

In the long term, the platform aims to promote synergies between actors and avoid duplication of work by identifying similar activities at an early stage and initiating cooperation.

The information is deliberately presented briefly, clearly and thematically as an entry point for in-depth research or future collaboration. The aim is to create as comprehensive and up-to-date a picture as possible of the research and implementation landscape in the region.

The Central Asian region is home to a remarkable diversity of ecosystems - from the steppes of Kazakhstan to the cold winter deserts of Turkmenistan and the high mountains of the Pamir. These ecosystems are not only of global ecological importance, but are also essential for the provision of key ecosystem services such as climate regulation, erosion control and water storage. At the same time, biodiversity in the region is increasingly exposed to anthropogenic and climatic stress factors.

The projects presented here are dedicated to the protection, sustainable use and scientific evaluation of this biodiversity. Large-scale conservation initiatives such as '''Altyn Dala''' and '''CADI''' pursue the goal of securing endangered habitats in the long term. In addition, scientific-political interface projects such as the '''IPBES Assessment for Europe and Central Asia''' address the need for evidence-based biodiversity policy action.
== Introduction ==

The Biodiversity Platform for Central Asia aims to provide a structured overview of ongoing and completed projects as well as existing expertise in the fields of [[Initial situation/Biodiversity and nature Conservation|biodiversity]], land use and climate resilience.

The focus is on the transparent presentation of the initial situation: Which topics have already been dealt with scientifically or in terms of development policy? Which organizations are involved? What data, findings and structures are already available?

The platform is aimed at researchers, political decision-makers, NGOs and international organizations that are active in Central Asia or are interested in the region. It is intended to help make existing knowledge visible, facilitate access to sources and contacts and thus avoid redundancies.

In the long term, the platform aims to promote synergies between actors and avoid duplication of work by identifying similar activities at an early stage and initiating cooperation.

The information is deliberately presented briefly, clearly and thematically as an entry point for in-depth research or future collaboration. New projects in the areas of biodiversity, sustainable land use and climate resilience in Central Asia are '''expressly welcome and can be added at any time'''. The aim is to create as comprehensive and up-to-date a picture as possible of the research and implementation landscape in the region.

Conceptual considerations on the establishment of a regional biodiversity platform also reflect current discourses on the promotion of transdisciplinary cooperation structures in the field of biodiversity conservation.
