The Central Asian region is home to a remarkable diversity of ecosystems - from the steppes of Kazakhstan to the cold winter deserts of Turkmenistan and the high mountains of the Pamir. These ecosystems are not only of global ecological importance, but are also essential for the provision of key ecosystem services such as climate regulation, erosion control and water storage. At the same time, biodiversity in the region is increasingly exposed to anthropogenic and climatic stress factors.

The projects presented here are dedicated to the protection, sustainable use and scientific evaluation of this biodiversity. Large-scale conservation initiatives such as '''Altyn Dala''' and '''CADI''' pursue the goal of securing endangered habitats in the long term. In addition, scientific-political interface projects such as the '''IPBES Assessment for Europe and Central Asia''' address the need for evidence-based biodiversity policy action. Conceptual considerations on the establishment of a regional biodiversity platform also reflect current discourses on the promotion of transdisciplinary cooperation structures in the field of biodiversity conservation.

The “Tajik-German Institute for the Protection of Biodiversity and Ecosystems” (TaGEB) strives to contribute to research, practice, and society through the development of innovative projects that can contribute to reducing ecosystem and biodiversity loss in the Republic of Tadjikistan and Central Asian region. The necessary international transfer of knowledge is substantiated by a cooperative relationship between Tadjikistan and Germany. In this context, measures for regional value creation to protect ecosystems and biodiversity, qualification measures for students and young scientists as well as communication concepts for society, politics, business and administration are developed.

TaGEB will be founded at Tajik National University (TUN), Rudaki Avenue 17, 734025 Duschanbe. Tajik and German experts will work together in the cooperation network to develop the future structure of the institute and the institute's goals. The institute is open to the further development of international and interdisciplinary cooperation and partnerships.

The starting point of the joint institute work is based on the international conference in May 2025 for science and practical solutions on ‘Protection of biodiversity and ecosystems in the Republic of Tadjikistan´ which was funded by the German Federal Ministry of education and research.

== Partners ==
Cooperation partners of the Institute aim to make contributions to research, practice, and society through the development of innovative projects that can contribute to reducing ecosystem and biodiversity loss in the Republic of Tadjikistan and Central Asian region. The necessary international transfer of knowledge is substantiated by a cooperative relationship between Tajikistan and Germany. In order to give the planned joint activities a formal working basis and visible charisma, the cooperation partners decide to establish a Tadjik-German Institute for the Protection of Ecosystems and Biodiversity in the Republic of Tadjikistan and Central Asian region.
